Sunday, January 08, 2006Beware the Lawyersby Tony Capodilupo Who of us in dealing with lawyers hasn’t at some point cursed at their very existence. Our society has perversely created them in numbers that defy all logic. We have mistakenly let them into every aspect of our lives and, unabated, they have metamorphosed to the exalted ranks of father confessors or priests from the middle ages. These alleged fiduciaries of the public trust have blasphemed this trust while becoming our overseers, spouting legalese verbiage while hovering over the most important rites of our civilization. As sheep to slaughter we humbly receive their blessings as they are constantly adding suspicion and unnatural caution to all our relationships, whether they be personal or professional. They pervert intellectual life and what would otherwise be normal public reason and discourse is supplanted by legal reasoning. They triumphs and defeats of lawyers replace the application of responsible judgment and deny us our precious justice. Inasmuch as we have surrendered our souls to lawyers, they have become self-canonized through an over inflated sense of self importance. They are omnipresent and secure in the knowledge that they are needed. If we would cast off the shackles of these societally corrosive professionals I am convinced that we can achieve much more while avoiding their brilliant legal maneuverings. We are being put through an emotional wringer for what? For the display of lawyers' techniques, lawyers' heroism?
